Good Questions & More About My New Flower Bed

Thanks to all who responded so kindly regarding yesterday’s post. Our sweet blogger from Eastside Cats wondered what is centered in my new flower bed. It’s our mailbox.
I topped off the soil level last night...
I’m not planning on telling a single neighbor that I installed this partly because somebody’s dog keeps leaving poop next to the post. ~sigh~ I hope this deters that behavior.

Liz A. is another dear who wisely asked how long the project took in actuality. Sad to say, I got so immersed in it that I’m not quite sure. I want to say it took around three hours.

The fun part will be picking out plants. I seldom buy annuals because they are so pricey for lasting only a season. But I may make an exception with this because this limited space would be fun to change out.

Should I start with some cold tolerant pansies? Then perhaps mimic an expensive summertime planter sold at a local garden center? Ooh... What about mums in the fall?

This is starting to sound pricey. Hmmm… We shall see...

  1. Well I sure hope that dog finds a new place for the daily deposits!

  2. If you know the owner of that dog you should scoop it up and set it on their doorstep! That looks like it was a fun project, and the previous post's time lapse vid is dizzying!

  3. What a rude dog owner. The least they could do is pick up the poop. And as for the time, ballpark is all I was curious about. Three hours is way different than all day, so it wasn't a very long project. Nice job.

  4. Thanks for letting me know it was your mailbox!
In our city, the mailboxes are attached to the house or front porch, so I don't always recognize the 'at the street' versions.
If you are looking for suggestions, then plant wildflowers!

    1. Thanks! As for the dog crap, I don't let it bother me overmuch. All the neighbors are pretty great, really.

  6. Yes, more costly but I prefer to have plants that come back each yr. I never change out pansies or mums. If I do mums I usually just put them in a pot. I wanted to so something like this around my mailbox cause I have always had things around my mailbox....but, it sort of sets on a hill and a lot of rain passes through there, so I have yet to come up with an idea. But what you have done will add a great vibe to the house! Would love to see a pic of the whole front of the house. Now, for the dog.....people around here actually carry plastic bags to pick up the poop when they are walking their dogs! Now I will get a stray dog here and again that will poop in the front yard. Chey of course uses the back in the fence. If that don't stop the issue and the dog maybe goes next to the mailbox.....go to the dollar store and buying some small plastic bags and hang them on the mailbox with a note.....Hey, I am not beneath doing that! lol

  7. It looks really nice. I hope it does indeed deter the dog pooping. How irresponsible of the owner!

  8. I love mums and pansies are nice too. Petunias really spread out nicely and come in a lot of great colors. XO

    1. Thanks! Petunias are a great suggestion I'd not considered for some reason.

  9. That's a sleek awesome mailbox I wondered if that was a lamp post or what in your time lapse. Pansies sound beautiful, but yes, annuals are very pricey for the time they last.

  10. missed the construction part though this looks great !!

if you have a dollar tree close by; they; at least at this store, always have a nice selection of fake flowers that they change out with the seasons.

have had neighbors compliment me on how nice the flowers in my pots look; especially say in August when things are frying out...

get some that have a well secured "top" { flower petals } so they aren't blowing off

    THANX dollar tree ;) ☺☺

  11. I enjoyed the mailbox & building of its home. My middle boy re-did his mailbox including laying the brick for it... which he just plowed on through doing though he had never done such a thing before. UTube helped I think.
