Rainbow Snippet for July 7th and 8th

Welcome to another round of Rainbow Snippets. Please visit our group’s Facebook page. There are a number of talented writers who gather to share bits of their LGBTQIA+ related works. Many of these folks are deservedly published or soon to be, and I’m honored they let me join their ranks.

This weekend I’m sharing something a little different. Alex sometimes has thoughts that are a little overdramatic. I hope you enjoy.

Snippet:

At last I understood what my father meant about God residing in each of us, and how we couldn’t find salvation in religious dogma. Would my quashed leopard have comprehended these truths sooner? Instead I dragged my rather reluctant parent into this or that church over my formative years, never to find what was lacking. Later, sex gave me a flavorless taste of what I thought was spiritual joy, like sips of stagnant water from a drying well.

This man’s radiance cleansed my soul. My heart would stop beating if Nickolas asked it to, and restart at his command.

~

Have you ever put a significant other on too high a pedestal?

  1. I haven't done it to anyone else, but I have had someone do it to me, and it wasn't at all comfortable. Some people might find power in it but it was stressful because I could never live up to the picture he'd painted of me in his head. Lovely snippet. It's given me a lot to think about

  2. Beautiful snippet! It would be touch to live up to being placed on a high pedestal.

    1. I agree. I saw a friend do it over and over, losing the gal in the end, and remember my mother encountering such a person in her youth. Ugh... Seems like no fun on either end. Thank you for the kind word!

  3. Excellent, as always. I have held many cats on a pedestal, but never a man :)

  4. I love that last line. The power of love does feel like it could control our bodies with just its will, doesn't it?

  5. I haven't done it to others, but others did it to me. It's not a comfy spot either way.

  6. While I don't quite relate to his feelings about Nickolas, boy do I relate to the endless search for something to feed my soul. Wow...you've captured the essence of that so perfectly.

  7. No, neither been on one, nor put anyone on one. But, the words, "My heart would stop beating if Nickolas asked it to, and restart at his command" may be familiar to most of us when we first fall in love! Or, perhaps become infatuated. It reminds me of this poem, how tall a pedestal the one was on. And relished it.

    THE FRIEND
    By Marge Piercy

    We sat across the table.
he said, cut off your hands.
they are always poking at things.
    they might touch me.
    I said yes.

Food grew cold on the table.
    he said, burn your body.
it is not clean and smells like sex.
    it rubs my mind sore.
    I said yes.

    I love you, I said.
    That’s very nice, he said
    I like to be loved,
    that makes me happy.
Have you cut off your hands yet?

  10. Oh, it's so hard to live up to something like that. I hope no one gets hurt.

  11. I love the way he expresses that Nicholas was the salvation and wholeness that he was searching for, but I do hope that he's learned that he needs to find it within himself first.

  12. Intriguing snippets, gives you a lot to think about though I wonder what Nikolas would think about being on a pedestal so high.

    1. Yeah. Aspiring to be a rock star, which is Nick's desire, is very different from a personal relationship. Thanks for the comment!

  13. Love that last line! But putting someone on a pedestal never works well for either person, I wouldn't think.

  14. Excellent snippet. I have been put on a pedestal and also done the putting of someone else on one in my youth - never a good idea, from either side.

    1. Oh, thank you! Sorry about that happening to you in both scenarios. Be well, my dear.

  15. There's some deep thought going on here, some deep, troubling thoughts. Pedestals are for plants and art - not for people.
