The Proper (Legal) Use of Hazard Lights in the United States

Writing about a tour bus breaking down on my fictional band, I couldn’t think for a moment the name for hazard lights. It occurred to me just as I prepared to ask Google. My fingers finished typing before I could stop them.

As a result I found an informative article. In the United States, not every region treats driving with hazard lights the same. I lucked out in Ohio, my instincts proving correct. Here it is legal to turn them on when driving in bad weather or through an emergency situation (i.e. you spot debris on the road).

For other in the USA, here is the article if you want to reference a quick guide to state laws (be aware the information was last updated in 2013):

Do you ever find yourself needing hazard lights? Is it legal where you live, in the USA or elsewhere?

Drive safely!

  1. I thought around here hazard lights were only for when you have to double park your car or park it somewhere not safe. And it's a temporary thing. I could be wrong, however.

  2. I think I used mine in a funeral line once but normally I don't use them. So, thinking I am good and not breaking any laws using them! haha....sorry you don't like swinging things. I love them. Chimes and all.

    1. I rarely use mine, either, though I sure did during a rain-drenched drive last fall. At least unless I needed to change lanes, then I turned them off.

It's so stupid about swings and whatnot. The phobia appeared before I could even talk and we have no idea why. A local grocery store with lots of hanging signs and high air circulation is a problem for me. I either make my partner shop alone there or wear a hat and get led around so I can't look up (!).

  4. My trucker husband could teach classes about the way things should be used and the horror stories about misuse. Interesting post, my friend. Hugs.

  5. In the UK we can only use them when we are stationary and possibly causing a hazzard - like getting a puncture on a blind corner or bumping into a deer which happens far to frequently in these parts!
