Not Even Ever
During rewrites, I tend to
remove way more than gets added to tell story. Pruning tightens the tell. And one
word that needs to leave my vocabulary is ‘even’.
A Must-Have Tool for Any Sensible Writer
Well, unless a surface is,
well… not. At least I don’t use ‘was’ in every other sentence like a certain
book featuring sparkly vampires. I refused to read that series, by the way.
For me, it is more than which words. As I began to get serious about writing, I started paying very close attention. Poetry needs to be succinct. Less is more. I learned to cut out all unnecessary words.
Writing prompts are wonderful exercises, especially when there is a word count. However, when it is a sentence count, less is also more. Run-on sentences, overuse of commas, and semicolons are all issues. If you end up with the required number of sentences, but they are incorrect, you are incorrect. The overuse of the words "and", "but","then", as well as a few others are pitfalls. For what its worth, I am usually a stickler. If I share my writing, it has to be as close to perfect as I can possibly get it to be. I will not crank out my work. It means too much to me.
Not sure that I have ever had a word that bothered me....I would think that if it is a word used over and over again that might bother me, esp if it is an usual word and they run it in the ground!
Anything that is overused. I get what you're saying here.
ReplyDeleteHave a fabulous day. ♥
So true. Thanks for weighing in. Hope your day is relaxing and fun!
DeleteGoing through the editing process has made me realize how many words I overuse. I need to diversify my vocabulary.
ReplyDeleteAin't it the truth! Fortunately, I enjoy editing my 'love child' of an anthology. Happy Writing!

Well said! I could not agree more. Happy Writing!
DeleteThe wrong word bothers me. That is, when someone uses "peek" but means "pique". That sort of thing.
ReplyDeleteFor me, I overuse "just". Among other things...
I totally agree with you! And it's sad how often those mistakes appear in published works these days. Just sayin'. Heh... Be well!
DeleteThe word I hate is more spoken than in writing- hashtag. It is a pound sign as far as I am concerned. :)
ReplyDeleteOh, I am so with you! Be well, my dear.

ReplyDeleteI have to be careful and not use words that are too esoteric. ~grin~ Be well, my friend!
