A Dental Journey – Not to Whine, but (Hopefully) Entertain :)

Last autumn my dentist announced I needed a little surgery. The procedure went well and my two new, reshaped crowns fit together better with the matching molars on the left side. A win, right?

Wrong. That alleged improvement led to minor neck and mouth pain. It seems I tend to grind my teeth at night. So back to the dental office I went.

A technician took a three dimensional scan of my mouth and sent it to a lab where they make mouth guards. This turn of events did not surprise me and I felt optimistic.

But the guard didn’t resolve the discomfort. Because of this my husband, son and nephew of dentists, predicted I would need a root canal. Oh, joy.

He was wrong. Hurray! The specialist suggested I be patient. Okay. Cool.

The staff originally predicted that after a few weeks I wouldn’t be able to fall asleep without what they term a ‘splint’. They were wrong. I requested adjustments while seeing the specialist. Even ground down a bit, the molded plastic disrupts my sleep.

Silly dreams and canker sores on my tongue annoyed me to the point I quit wearing it. I chew with care and will call in January. I wonder what they will suggest.

Are you familiar with canker sores and their causes? Did you know that daily doses of the supplement L-lysine promote oral healing?

  1. I could never wear a mouth guard. In the night, at some point, I'd remove it in my sleep. But finally, after a molar became painful and was pulled , magically the tmj I experienced routinely was gone. My remaining teeth fit together. I have broken edges on my two front upper teeth and recently sliced my tongue when eating peanut butter toast. I have to file them down again.

  2. I don't know anything about canker sores. I'm happy about that.

Have a fabulous day and week. Hugs. ♥

  3. Yikes. Who knew that crowns would disrupt your sleep? Even a little thing can throw off our life balance. I hope you get it figured out (and are able to get a good night's sleep).

  4. I didn't quite know what canker meant. I would have thought in a short time, your mouth would adjust to the new work and all would settle down. Maybe a bit of light filing too.

  5. That sounds awful. I am a grinder, but have been spared the canker sores. XO

  6. I didn't know what 'canker sores' were. But after looking it up, I realise that I have had them once in a while, which have gone on their own. In your case, were they triggered by the crown?
