All the kind words left on my almost abandoned blog are much appreciated. My annoying upper respiratory infection is fading every day to the point my husband and I went grocery shopping together. I consider this not only progress in my health but also attitude.
The fact our lives turned around so fast has left my emotional responses behind. We all know many caregivers never see conditions improve and I have unending respect for their forbearance. Thus I also feel shame over some lingering depression.
But his regained interest in food, and thus my cooking and baking adventures, has provided a huge boost. Roasting my homegrown pumpkins, their seeds, and trying my hand at smoking meats and baking various breads, pies, making apple butter, and even turning apple scraps into apple cider vinegar are rewarding busywork. We are even considering a little distillery kit to make my vinegar less watery.
Did you know there is such a thing as Mother of vinegar, and that it’s a symbiotic relationship between beneficial yeast and bacteria? Are you a fan of vinegar in general or specifically?

I'm happy to hear of the progress. Seven of our kitties have been battling a nasty URI for 2-1/2 weeks now. I like vinegar in things but not by itself.
ReplyDeleteOh, no! I wish you and your kitties all the best.
DeleteGood to see this pop up and that you are well on the mend. Stay warm.
ReplyDelete:D
DeleteDearest Darla,
ReplyDeleteWow, you certainly are on the mend with so many bubbly projects going on!
Hugs,

DeleteGlad you are feeling better and also glad your hubby can eat more now. I did not know about the symbiotic relationship with vinegar and yeast. I like vinegar, especially the malt one on fries. XO
ReplyDeleteOh, yum. Hugs, my dear.
DeleteLingering depression, don't be ashamed, it is just a humans makeup. We would all love to be advancing in age without illness, aches and pains....BUT that is not how it goes and with illness, aches and pains comes depression. Most times how long it hangs with you or how bad it gets depends on the illness or pains. They hang on, the depression hangs on. I have found that to just be a given. I know a lot of folks would love to know how I go, how I push, how I manage, MEDS! You see the med I take for Fibro also treats depression. Without that, I would never be a pleasant person. Now, that don't mean that I don't ever get depressed taking it cause I do. The best steps for me to take on those days is staying away from people. Shutting down and being my own company. So, don't be ashamed. Yes, I know about the MOTHER. Best to have the apple cider vinegar with the mother. But then again, remembering to take that stuff daily would be a plus also!! oops....
ReplyDeleteI should start taking the vinegar daily. :) Hugs, my dear.
DeleteCan imagine how a dismaying health condition can knock the feet out from under you.
ReplyDeleteWe use Bragg's Organic Applie Cider Vinegar with the Mother, as it reads on the label.
The Hubby puts that sh*t on everything!
Plus, he makes sauerkraut and pickles, which are also fermented foods.
That's the exact brand I bought. :D We still have many pickles from past harvests but sauerkraut is not something I ever considered. I'll have to try that. Be well!
DeleteCaregiving is hard. It takes a lot out of you. As for vinegar, my stomach is a sensitive thing, and vinegar is too harsh for it. (My stomach doesn't even like orange juice.) I like it (especially as an ingredient in ketchup), but I have to use it sparingly.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you have such a sensitive stomach. We feel blessed not to suffer any such thing. Best wishes, my dear.
DeleteI'm glad you're feeling better. Being sick sucks. Did you same me some of your baking goodies? I hope so.
ReplyDeleteHave a fabulous day and week. Hugs. ♥
I do have some to share, so come on over any time, my dear. :) Hugs to you and yours.
DeleteWe're glad you're both on the mend and we hope you continue in that direction. dad loves vinegar, and it's not unusual for him to drink the juice from the pickle jar, which makes mom shake her head. That's also cool how you're experimenting with all that stuff. Mom makes her own cleaner with just vinegar and baking soda. Never feel shame over the lingering depression. It's not unusual, and we hope each day brings a new level of improvement. Dad says "trust me on this one." Be well, Darla (and hubby, of course).
ReplyDeletesorry to hear there's been a nasty virus lurking around there and hoping you both are much improved and stay happy N healthy ♥♥
ReplyDeleteapple cider vinegar is used on a: "hope it never needs to be used basis " to get rid of UTI in cats, and white vinegar is used to clean the bird bath, remove mold on the sidewalk and mixed with dish soap to clean the windows !!

ReplyDeleteI am so happy to learn that you and your husband too, are feeling better! Thank heavens. This has been such an exhausting run for you both. I like vinegar, apple cider vinegar, on things but not by itself. Keep feeling better and let us know how you are. xo
checking on you.... hoping you are feeling well
ReplyDeleteAre you feeling even better? The bothmof you?
ReplyDeletexoxo
the both of you. Sorry for the error. My goodness.

ReplyDeleteDarla, it appears that you get more done in a day than I do in a week (I'll blame age for my low activity level). I don't think you've visited my blog since all five of my indoor-only cats had respiratory infections, but it was hell: https://snowbrush.blogspot.com/2024/10/life-gets-mite-hard-check-in.html
Fortunately, everything is back to normal.
I just commented, but I have a new computer, and I think it might have gone through as Anonymous.
