Where the Bodies are Buried

My dreams keep getting weirder and weirder. The other night, what my dreaming self thought to be a church with attached graveyard ended up being a private home. That wasn’t scary. The live inhabitants’ ominous activities threatening me inside the house turned things nightmarish.

Sad to say, that’s been my imagination’s sole outlet. My writing challenge project, supposed to be a lighthearted romantic comedy, morphed into an unrelated satirical story before petering out on the ninth. Oh, well. I’m not upset since I considered skipping National Novel Writhing Month altogether, both this November and in 2019 (!) for various reasons. I do need to let my fellow writers know I’m still alive.

~grin~

And that nightmare brought to mind a question. You see, here in Ohio one can often find tiny cemeteries on private land, especially on multi-generational family farms. The picture below is from Island Farm on Roanoke Island North Carolina. I think the epitaph is wonderful.

Fannie B. Dough
Born July 14, 1826
Died Aug. 2, 1894
Age 68 yrs.
As a wife, devoted;
As a mother, affectionate;
As a friend, ever kind and true.

Would an attached burial ground sway you from buying an otherwise ideal home or would you simply honor and care for these harmless neighbors’ plots? What about where you live now? Have seen any private ancestral cemeteries?

  1. Nightmares sometimes make for good content for a novel.

    1. I agree 100%. :) Maybe I should try writing again even if the challenge is half over.

  2. I'm not terribly fond of the nightmares, but occasionally I do dream a horror story. *shudders* I don't know if I'd want to buy land that had a cemetery on it, but then again, considering how long Earth has been around, it's likely that we all live on spots that have something buried underneath. . .

  3. I don't think I'd have any problems with a cemetary on my land, or living next to one.
    A few years ago, I found The Hubby's great grandparents in a cemetery not too far from home: he had no idea.
    As for the my immediate family, only my father has passed away, and he currently lives on my mother's china cabinet in a wooden box.

  4. Hubby has weird dreams all the time. He was in a sword fight with someone the other night and scared me half to death when he woke me up by kicking me. Accidental of course.

    I wouldn't mind having a private cemetery is I was buying a home and I would tend to it out of respect.

    Have a fabulous day and week, Darla. Big hug. ♥

  5. Yes, it would deter me. Bad Feng Shui- a home should be a mile from cemeteries, churches and hospitals. Yes, I am crazy.

    1. No, you're not crazy. :) I'd add schools to that list. Heh... Wouldn't want school buses clogging my street.

  6. Uh oh, what did the inhabitants of the house do to you in your dream? I have nightmares but they always involve cats, trying to gather them up and save them from some terrible danger, while under duress myself, usually from very bad people. Often the kittens look like adult cats but are only about three inches tall and I wonder if I can bottle feed such kittens because in my dreams I never have KMR and need it. A cemetery would be no big deal to me. I like them. They're peaceful.

    1. It makes sense you would suffer such nightmares. But I'm sorry. ~hugs~ They sound awful. I don't recall what happened inside the house, really. And I agree with you about cemeteries. The main town cemetery was my preferred childhood dog walking spot a few blocks from home. :) In another direction lies an old inactive graveyard that I would sometimes visit by myself.

  7. Yes, we have those also. Like you said, generations of families and usually the wealthy that might have owned a lot of land that has been sold off through the yrs. Would I buy a home with an attached graveyard. NO....why? I believe in hauntings, I have lived where there was other "people" were living. Although mine was peaceful I watch Ghost Adventures, Ghost Nations and Dead Files, I know there is evil out there!

  9. Dad says he'd love to have a property with a graveyard on it. Says it'd provide inspiration for some great short stories if nothing else. Honestly, I think he's full of sheeit. He freaks himself out with thoughts of zombies, monsters and escaped killers when he goes down into the basement for something at night, never mind having a graveyard nearby! Dad hasn't had a good nightmare for a long time, but he does have some of the craziest dreams. Mom just shakes her head and says "where the HELL did that come from?!"
