Hide and Seek – & – An Early Christmasy Surprise

Our vegetable plants continue to produce without any serious pest problems, I’m happy to say. Ripe peppers, eggplant, and tomatoes are easier to spot than cucumbers. Sometimes they elude my notice long past peak canning size. When he saw the one pictured, my husband joked that the rest must have cheered it on.

The one that almost got away...

Another fun thing about gardening is odd but tasty imperfections. The hot burrito chilies are fully ripe when orange but I couldn’t resist picking this one.

I think a Christmas elf lost a shoe...

Have you heard cucumbers called ‘pickles in training’? What’s your favorite vegetable?

  1. Nothing better than fresh from the garden. Okay, my favorite veggie? Just one? I'm not sure I can do that. Asparagus, broccoli, and almost every other one too. Asparagus is my favorite though. Especially with a nice Filet Mignon.

Have a fabulous day, Darla. Big hug. ♥

  2. Oh, I adore pickles!
The Hubby even mixes pickle juice leftovers into sauerkraut, hummus, and he soaks raw veggies in it to...just for little while...to give them some zip.

    1. Interesting! We've canned a lot of pickles this summer, for sure.

  3. That is an odd looking pepper. We used to get some odd carrots. Zucchini is my favorite veggie.

    1. Zucchini is a good choice. I like to cook that with yellow squash sometimes. :)

  5. Right now my favorite vegetable is the carrot. But I love beets too, in soup, and lettuce, if its crisp. That pepper is awesome. I like cukes too, sliced and raw.

    1. We attempted to grow carrots with no luck. ~sigh~ But you've reminded me that I planned on pickling some eggs with beets. :) Yum.

  6. Though mom took a stab at a small garden some years ago neither she nor dad have much patience for such things.

  7. Love the elf shoe...that is so cute. I am not sure what you are feeding that garden with but you do get some strange looking veggies! And BIG...that is a big cucumber, and I think that is a pickle way past training time!! My fave veggie of course has to be one that is not all that good for you!!! CORN...I love CORN. Full of starch and hard to digest! Yep...that's me! HAHA...I like carrots and cucumbers. Not a big fan of peas UNLESS I have creamed taters to mix them up in and green beans are somewhat iffy on my scale of veggies also. My least fave, lettuce. I know, I am just plain strange! haha...Is bread a veggie? I love BREAD. I love anything you can wrap in bread or anything you can make a sandwich with using bread. Not wheat bread, WHITE...I love white bread. haha

  8. I know what you mean about cucumbers -- they're so good at hiding, as well as growing extra vines to hide under. The other day I found six that were over 10 inches long and 3 inches in diameter. Time to learn how to can pickles!

It's difficult to choose favorites, but I'd say beans (the green or yellow sort) and beets. They didn't do well, sadly. I love carrots too, but I'm not growing them.

    1. Ooh... That sounds interesting. I've seen them for sale at an international market but haven't tried them.
