L is for Lucky Dube

Picture a rainy afternoon with a book in your hand. But you want to hear more than the wet splatter against your window as accompaniment. What music do you choose? On one particular lazy day I found Lucky Dube thanks to the reggae music channel. And the atypical song “Soul Taker” creeped me out so delightfully that I bought the album online that very day.

For the letter L I’ve imagined a band name that sounds sort of like a disease - Listeria. Or I suppose the vine called wisteria inspired it. That plant actually cost me some grief because the behemoth never flowered once before toppling my trellis. I’ve decided that this band plays brooding instrumentals accompanied by eerie, melancholy lyrics. Sort of like Otep, I suppose, who you can read about in a few days.

    1. Thank you for the kind word! I think reggae grabbed my attention while at my favorite vacation spot. Driving along the beach road with Bob Marley on the radio drew me to other artists. On another note, I have to tell you my iPod was on random at the gym today and toward the end a favorite piece by Beethoven came on. It was great winding down to a performance of his Piano Sonata #14 in C Sharp Minor Op. 27/2 "Moonlight" Adagio. ~grin~ Be well!

  2. Doesn't Listeria have something to do with Listerine? That jogs something in my memory.

    1. That's an excellent observation. I thought Listerine had been named after the brilliant Dr. Joseph Lister but may have had it a bit backward. Thanks to you, I learned that listeria is a genus of bacteria containing ten species. Yikes! Must have stored that information wrong in the old mental filing cabinet. ~grin~ Thank you for stopping by!

  3. Found this on Youtube and loved it. Perfect opening for a lovely, if strange, song. The bits with the childlike voice are really spooky! Hysteria after finding Listeria playing to the wisteria?

    1. That's awesome, my dear! I agree about that childish voice. And thank you for the chuckle. Liz kindly triggered me to look up the bacteria. How could I have forgotten it was real? ~grin~ Thank heaven I've never experienced the resulting sickness.

  4. I enjoy Lucky Dube, after I looked up a couple of their songs on youtube. Hope to get a cd. Listeria, sounds like a cross between the vine and a parasitic infection.

    1. That's fabulous, my dear! You're so kind to actually look up these bands. I should have been more industrious and included links. ~blush~ I like your take on listeria! Can't believe I forgot it really is a genus of bacteria. Guess high school is too distant a (bad) memory. ~grin~ Be well!

  5. I don't have a green thumbs so any plant that sees me coming their way hide themselves. As for the music, I appreciate a good melancholy sound in the background when I am writing dialogue or an article where I want to touch the emotions of my readers.

    1. I understand how you feel, Pat. Houseplants don't like my home. Unfortunately, I never thought of the fact we have exactly one southerly facing window. I'm just glad to have discovered outdoor gardening when I did. As for touching your readers, you are certainly moving me with your take on the challenge. Shalom, my dear.

  7. Lucky Dube. Ha! That's hilarious. I like your name a lot! Sorry about the Wisteria, though. What a drag it didn't bloom!

    1. Ah, thank you. I appreciate the sympathy. Unfortunately, garden centers and nurseries are not always our friend. They will sometimes sell plants totally unsuited to their own region, I've learned. ~sigh~ We live and we learn, I guess. Be well!

  8. I enjoy a good reggae. I may need to look these guys up.

I can only imagine Listeria being a Heavy Metal/Death Metal type sound. Their first single "Feel my Disease"
