P is for Podunk

A decade or so ago I attended a show with some friends when these Texas natives opened the venue. I cannot recall who we went to see, though Alabama is the name that comes to mind. Anyway, I bought Podunk’s self titled album right away as well as subsequent recordings. They have uplifting yet bittersweet music much like the great band Tesla.

Today’s made up band goes by the stingingly rude moniker Pepper Spray. They won’t make you tear up, though, unless you perhaps get injured thrashing around in the mosh pit in front of their hard rocking stage. I’m thinking of the real group Mindless Self Indulgence here. MSI's James Euringer (AKA Jimmy Urine) is entertainingly rude to his own audience. It’s a hoot, and The Birthday Massacre (see the letter B) opened for them, my initial introduction to that group. ~grin~ I can't help bringing up some of these fun bands more than once.

  1. Podunk makes me think of some podunk town. That's probably deliberate on their part.

  2. I always heard podunk used as a word for a place in the middle of nowhere--like Podunk, Arkansas. I lived in Texas for a few years and heard it often there.

    1. Me, too, Kathleen, though I live in Ohio. That's neat that it's so ubiquitous. How did you like living in Texas? I've heard mixed reviews, though I know it's a big state with lots to offer different lifestyles and tastes. I'd like to visit someday.

  3. Thank you for the comment you left on my Procrastination post. It was lovely. Your A to Z posts have contributed vastly to my procrastination as I spend ages looking up the bands on Youtube - but it's all brilliant as I'm expanding my musical repertoire! Today I discovered Dashboard Mary by Podunk.

  5. It's okay to bring in a band more than once. By the way, I love the band Alabama. When I saw their name mentioned I thought, Pat, there is still hope for you.
Keep it coming. I'm enjoying your blog.

    1. Me, too! I hope he never gets hurt. ~shudder~ My niece had been in a car accident weeks before the Mindless Self Indulgence show and the violent crush caused her more pain from a minor back injury.

  7. Listening to them on youtube while I type this comment. Guess they're not quite my style, but easy to listen to that's for sure.

    2. So true! ~grin~ You're probably smart not to stay signed in all the time, honestly.
I really appreciate the fact you're checking out the music. You're so kind. I hope today is going well for you.
