Food that Makes Me Hapi – An International Shopping Experience

No, that last word is not a typo. I am just a big fan of Hapi brand Japanese snacks. You can see the truth in the photo.

Anyway, on Thursday we really needed to go grocery shopping. My partner suggested something out of the ordinary from our local grocer and I agreed. So we packed a cooler with freezer packs and drove south toward Cincinnati, Ohio in the Midwest United States.

Not a long drive; oh, is it worthwhile. Besides the snack stuffs pictured and that wonderful sizzling Hungarian style bacon we brought home a sour cherry flavored goat cheese spread, fresh baked crusty bread, jellied tongue deli slices, and packages of frozen natto (fermented soybean, a traditional Japanese breakfast food over steamed rice – yum). There is more, too. We spent about $150 and really stocked up.

Sometimes it’s not so bad living in a flyover state packed with boring chain restaurants. I just wish we could pull up a stretch of oceanfront beach. ~sigh~ Thank heaven for Jungle Jim’s!

  1. HAHA....am I a foodie! What exactly does that mean, are you a foodie? Do I like food, oh yes. Do I eat a lot, oh no....esp. since surgery. My issue was not that I ate a lot, I tend to eat the wrong thing. So if asking if I am foodie means a certain food, I would have to say, sweets! Funny part, I never was a sweet eater till I started in perimenopause years ago. Down hill from there.

    1. I feel for you on the tough food restrictions. As for the term foodie, I use it to mean someone adventurous. That may be incorrect, for that matter. ~hugs~ Be well!

  2. WOW! Very unique items, most I am not familiar with. I am glad you were able to get them.

    1. Thanks! I ended up not caring for the seaweed crisps - just fishy tasting to me. And I picked out the spicy flavor hoping otherwise. But my partner will happily eat those and the fish flavored variety, so it's all good. I hope Snowball is happily waiting for you over the rainbow bridge. ~hugs~ Be well!

  3. As a chef I like all foods, but if I were to choose a favourite it would be real Indian street food. I love it! By the way, where I live couldn't be more different. The only flyover I ever see is when a fly flies over my head!

    1. I bet Indian street food is amazing. Since I don't have the budget for such travel we tend to watch shows about international cuisine sometimes. Wish I could visit you! Be well.

  4. Nope, not a foodie. Way too picky. And you don't have to be a "flyover state" to be packed with chain restaurants.

    1. You sound like a dear friend who only eats hamburgers, and those a certain way, when out to eat. That's true about restaurants, except that at least when we visit other regions we find nice local places and more variety. ~sigh~ It makes travel fun, though. Be well!
