The first point is a long overdue post. On January 28th my husband needed a computer part replaced. Knowing this installation might take a few hours we wanted some diversion. I found the perfect place, Jungle Jim’s international market. He appreciated my idea; the man adores different foods.
Not only did driving surface roads prove easy but I discovered a branch of our new Internet service provider therein. My guy’s honorary military discharge grants some small discounts. This latest requiring in-person verification, we expected another road trip until that day.
We also replenished favorite foods. The shrimp chips were too pricey, as were many items. Various dried noodles are a different story. Despite the recommended shelf life, most types don’t spoil for a long while.
We also stocked up on pickled herring. It’s in the German section.
On that note, my brother and I planned a meeting with our spouses at a German style sausage house in Columbus, Ohio last Sunday. The distance is almost perfectly halfway between our residences.
What stores do you frequent? Does your grocer offer international products?

How fun. We shop at Raley's and Costco. We can get just about anything from other countries. We love that too. So many wonderful food to enjoy.
ReplyDeleteHave a fabulous day and rest of the week. Hugs. ♥
:D
DeleteI didn't know your hubby was a veteran. Please tell him, I thank him for his service. Our local stores have an international section, but it is very limited to things like taco shells and Chinese foods. XO
ReplyDeleteHe was an IT guy stateside who gained recognition for his great contributions. :D Thanks for your kind words and hugs, my dear.
DeleteWe usually shop at Fresh Market and they have a nice variety, but right next door is an international food shop. German food is good!
ReplyDeleteYes!
DeleteI flew into and out of Columbus when I went to visit my brother for Thanksgiving. My mother was taken to a hospital in Columbus when everything happened. That's where she died.
ReplyDeleteThere are some places that we want to visit more, but just don't make it there. It sounds like that market is one of them.
We want to visit more often. I'm sorry you lost your mother, my dear.
DeleteTrader Joe's, Meijer, and Kroger are The Hubby's hunting-and-gathering locales.
ReplyDeleteWe have a local place called Vince & Joe's and it's very international; we shop there a handful of times a year.
If they have artichokes and tahini, and lots of cabbage, that's where we go. Hahaha...
We bought a Youtuber's Korean cookbook and the recipes use lots of cabbage. I'm hoping to grow some this summer. :D As always, I admire your dedication to not eating meat. Be well!
DeleteStores? What stores? haha....Not only are we what is called a food desert we are a store desert. The only stores we are not short on are Dollar General stores. Such a rural and unincorporated area, if they start letting grocery stores, general stores or even fast food, we would be in heaven. So, to answer your question, Dollar General. Next city over, Walmart. International stores, if you don't find it in DG or Wally World, hang it up.
ReplyDeleteI hoped you would have good farmers' markets, but then that's only seasonal. I thought food deserts were only in big cities. Ugh...
DeletePeople living downtown Nashville now and prob a lot of the bigger cities, have Kroger, and Publix built in the bottom of the new apartments. They have better access then I do. It is nuts. Yes, we have farmers markets but there again, seasonal.
DeleteOh, it would be nice to just walk to the grocery store. But at least we don't have a long drive. Hugs, my dear.
DeleteI don't think I"ve tried pickled herring. I like sardines, straight from the tin.
ReplyDeleteAnd sardines are so much more sustainable than my favorite, canned salmon. Be well, my dear.
DeleteMy regular grocery store like Wegmans does have a small international food aisle but I feel like those prices are always too high. I prefer to go straight to an Indian grocer for south asian ingredients. We have Asian, Russian and Middle Eastern grocery stores in our area as well.
ReplyDeleteNice!
DeleteAll dad says is if there was a store nearby that sold only sardines and garlic- or feta-stuffed green olives he'd be in heaven. Effing weirdo.
ReplyDeleteLOL
