Every Rose Has its Thorn

I went to the grocery store the other day to snag some relatively inexpensive half gallons of milk. The limit of five has restocked my freezer. That and some fresh produce were my main goals but I couldn’t resist the plethora of flower bouquets marked down following St. Valentine’s Day.

My husband approved my purchase since my birthday was a few days earlier and I asked for nothing special...

They aren’t as fragrant as those I recall from the 1980’s. In addition, a lot of petals landed on the floor while the thorny, dry woody stems made trimming them a chore. While roses are much cheaper now, I’d be angry if my full price bouquet rotted in under a week.

Do you purchase cut flowers? If so, did you know that a slanted knife cut allows the stems better water absorption than a scissor's pinch?

  2. Those are pretty! We never have live flowers in the house with nine cats.

  3. I like that you bought yourself Valentines roses. Another tip for gerberas is pierce the stem right through below the flower with a needle. I don't know why this works, but it does make the blooms last longer. I think it might work for tulips too.

  5. I don't know why, but I see cut flowers as corpses. I'd rather see them in the fields. They don't last long there either, but at least they're then going to seed to spread more color. I know, its stupid.

    1. No, it's not stupid at all. ~nods~ I do occasionally bring in a flower from my yard; my prolific helleborus blooms last a long, long time. :) As for floral arrangements, I'll usually just stop and smell them, especially carnations. But finding a deal and knowing they were doomed anyway made my decision that day. Be well!

  6. Belated Happy Birthday, Miss Darla! Me and dad hope you had a spectacular day. We don't do flowers here. Mom's never cared much for 'em, as dad learned very, very early in their relationship too long ago to remember exactly when.

    1. I hated the fact my first love wasted money on flowers for me while living in his parents' basement. ~shakes head~ Thanks for the kind words and best wishes to your awesome parents, sweet Smudge.

  8. no flowerz of any kind in the house because of a "flower child" ...AKA...mackerull, who seems to think they are a ...slite snax :) ♥♥
