Why Our Carpet Looks Awful

This house, built in 1978, has all original carpet as far as we know. My husband and I had one bathroom and the kitchen renovated years ago, plus new entryway flooring installed. Outside is another story altogether. Anyway, the following illustrates why we’ve left the carpet alone.

While I make grooming attempts, Terra and Polly wrestling gets the job done better. Check this out…

I must be clear that we’d rather have our silly kitties than a neat and tidy house. They are well behaved felines with only the expected issues.

Meanwhile, Dandelion is a long legged female with great strength. We think she never enjoyed a proper kittenhood before we took her in. By the way, my husband doesn’t know she’s shredded anything but cat furniture.

Look at those pink ear tips as she
surveys her efforts...

Do you prefer rugs and carpeting? If not, what is your favorite flooring material?

  1. Our kitties are messy too, but we don't care. They bring us such joy. The only carpet we have is on the stairs. The rest of our home is faux wood floors. We love them. Much cleaner and much easier to keep clean.

Have a fabulous day and rest of the week. Hugs. ♥

  2. I prefer carpet but it was a lot of toing and froing earlier this year as we discussed the merits of carpet and boards, although it was always going to be carpet in the bedrooms. We decided on carpet and I now wish I'd done nothing. The old wasn't so bad, just looking a bit old fashioned.

    1. I'm sad you have regrets. I can relate, as the nearby business owner provided crappy labor replacing our entryway linoleum. Ugh...

  3. Our carpet is a mess but with nine cats we can't afford to replace it. I'd rather have hardwood floors.

  4. I grew up with carpeting. (The '70s.) Currently live with wood flooring. I don't know what I'd pick if it were up to me. I'm glad it hasn't been.

  5. Dandelion has done well for herself, finding you and also destroying your carpet. Meanwhile, those other two, engaged in drama play fights....love it, mine even though mostly old, still do that.

  6. Sorry I am just seeing this post. We have 2 braided rugs that get smaller every year because I have to cut the outer row off where the cats tear it up. And we have mostly wood floors, but they could use a refinishing. XO

  7. PS: That was a funny video. I agree, I would rather the cats than nice things.

  10. those ears perked up like that makes me think that either she is proud of that work or she is trying to decide what more she can do!! LOL....I had carpet at my home of 28 yrs in Old Hickory. I had original wood floors at Moms house. I have laminate flooring and it looks great. It looks like gray wood. Anyway, I love carpet cause I did not vac as much as I should but you did not know it. With wood or laminate you have to stay on top of the furry fur of cats. Somedays I sweep, some I do the dust mop thing and others I vac. I know this might sound stupid but...I feel I have more control over the broom. Then I either sweep it into my long handle dustpan or vac it up if the vac is out. And lets get real, it pretty much never gets put up. As for the original wood floors...beautiful as they were, they were the hardest to care for. You had to be careful moving stuff around on it. You had to be sure and not sort laundry in the hall and leave a damp rag on it. I like my laminate with large throw rugs. Now.....did I help any? lol

  11. Dearest Darla,
In February of 2007 we started with ripping out our cotton/wool carpet from bedroom and living and went to solid oak planks. Then we did the dining room, guest bedroom and also the office and the staircase! That was the best decision ever made!
We used to have a silk/wool rug in the living but when our Dido boy had so many barfs, we rolled it up and trashed it. It served us 19 years.
    Hugs,
    Mariette + Kitties
