Do Not Disturb – or – Another Reason to Love My Life

The other day I lamented about my spouse bringing home some groceries other than what I requested. Since that post started to get long, I decided to edit out some of what I wrote. This is both a defense of him and, of course, another expression of gratitude.

What
s not to like about a guy who tolerates my obsession with Palaye Royale (see below)?

A Boy and His Dog, Because I Can...
For starters, let me tell you he used to call me whenever a question arose regarding my shopping list. For years I counted on at least one telephone call whenever he went solo. This is no longer the case.

I think two reasons come into play.

The first is that my cheap Tracphone often jumps to voicemail before I have a chance to pick up a call, so there’s a time lag in communication. Also, he knows I hate interruptions when writing and subscribes to the (doubtless now frowned upon) old adage: Happy Wife, Happy Life.

There is an underlying tease between us that I’m no fun to be around when I’m grumpy. Who is? Ultimately, he wants me to live a life of peace and comfort. I feel the same toward him.

The bottom line is about respect in our relationship.

I have mentioned to him that it might be best he just not buy a product when in doubt, but I am not going to full-on berate him for taking chances. It’s rather appreciated when he steps up and makes a choice without a consult. Too many times we have gone back and forth on where to dine, for example, neither of us willing to make a decision.

So now I’m going to heat up a soggy, cheese filled soft pretzel stick and not complain. At least I won’t be hungry for a while.

Do you dread or enjoy grocery shopping?

  1. I absolutely love grocery shopping, so I rarely send my husband to do it without me.

  2. Hubby and I can both shop without the other, but we both tend to consult. We have android phones so we can text each other. Hubby is good about sending a picture of something he's thinking about buying. We do fine with the shopping. We too are considerate to each other. As it should be.

I don't mind shopping at Raleys, but I hate going to Costco. Hubby does Costco and I do Raleys. It works out.

Have a fabulous day and week. ♥

    1. Nice! Shopping is getting more and more difficult with all the choices. He brought home simple macaroni and cheese that turned out to be some nasty new wheat pasta version in stupid shapes for kids. I wouldn't have noticed that in the store, either. Ugh...

  3. There is so many things in my life I don't like doing anymore....going to the grocery store is one. Washing dishes is another...not so much doing laundry but putting them up I dislike...shall I go on? HAHA....So sweet of you to not rag hubby out for getting the wrong thing. Maybe take a pic of the stuff and send it to his phone so he will know what you want! Do tracphones have cameras? So glad you are going to brothers party....are you dressing up?

    1. My house is a disaster right now and I can't seem to care enough to put down my writing. Heh... Have been thinking about costumes. Haven't enjoyed dressing up since I gained so much weight. Sigh...

    2. Oh my....even with gained weight I always dressed up. I have always just enjoyed doing it. I so understand the diaster of the home. I can't seem to make myself do much of anything I have to do other then feed the the animals, clean out the litter box and go to the bathroom! haha...I am sure you all have realized that I have not been cratfing much. Anyway....the WHIPS you asked about was suppose to be wipes..haha. I need to be sure to start proof reading my stuff. One reason why I don't is on my job in printing I did a lot of proof reading and it really just turned me off. Sort like you and used clothes. Honey...they are washable! haha...the other everything I had on except socks and my underware was from Goodwill. Awesome nice pair of jeans, beautiful top, amazing cover up and the boots! I can't afford to shop with the prices of things at the stores anymore...hell who am I kidding, I have been wearing Goodwill for years and I also wore hand me downs.

    3. You're a dear. The clothes my cousin handed down were awful to me. I hated buttons and frills. It was the seventies. Little girls' clothes had them as useless adornment. Once, I tried to turn down a bag of clothing. My mother admonished me. ~grin~ And you would look adorable in a burlap bag (my maternal grandpa's saying).

    4. Hey, I know some girls that could pull off a burlap sack but I was not one of those, I would have looked like a girl in a burlap sack! HAHA...I did not do frills and lace as a teen, and younger my mom made all my clothes without that but I love LACE now...isn't it funny how our taste changes? I love denim and lace and before I would never have worn BLING but I do now! I like to think that if just took me this long to find the true me and to not worry about what others think! Cause you know...I don't give crap what others think!

  4. I love going to the grocery store. Now it makes sense that he didn't consult you first. You might just need to do a visual list--a list with pictures. Maybe that might help.

    1. Really? That's interesting you enjoy it. I think our biggest issues are that there are too many choices and he apparently can't see very well anymore. That makes me sad, but how else could he not tell those pretzel sticks were stuffed with cheese? The box plainly showed that picture. Oh, well. It is what it is.

  6. I viewpoint is probably colored by the fact I am a widow, and don't have anyone to buy the "wrong" things anymore! If a loved one brings home the wrong pretzels, or size of canned peaches, it's not that big a deal, is it?

I say, if you want a particular thing, shop yourself. If you can't, then accept what's brought home in the spirit it was bought, love and helpfulness.

I would personally resent a picture list, or photos on my phone. I would feel infantilized.

This is just me, other ways may work for others and their partners. There is certainly no right or wrong way! I would hesitate to suggest purchases were wrong though. Like overseeing a household chore you usually do yourself. No one is going to do it your way, and no one is probably going to do it "right" or "well enough," are they? That just ends up in a "Then do it yourself next time since I can't do it right."

These little things just don't matter.

I don't mind shopping. I dislike unpacking and putting away more. I actually like not having a dishwasher, I hated putting clean dishes away!

(Hope I didn't step on any toes...)

  7. I hate to shop, hubby likes to shop...for groceries that is. He likes to Cosco's, says when I go we spend more, lol. Gives me an excuse to stay home. The funny thing is, I think he over buys and sometimes I have a hard time getting things into the freezer...so not sure why he says we spend when I go....hum....There's a little family owned grocery 1 mile away that I like to go, but you do pay a bit more. Personally I like keeping the family business vs the big chains going.

    2. Wow! And by the way, I hate grocery shopping. I had a terrible incident at Winco, I don't think I wrote about it. Where an employee harassed me horribly, following me, coming up behind me so that when I turned from a food display, he was within inches, then he blurted out "are you finding everything you need?" After which he moved two feet away and began whistling loudly. It was so awful and bizarre. I went with a friend to talk to a manager about it, but he just trivialized it. I even asked if they thought I was stealing or something because someone online told me maybe that was it. I haven't been back, and its really the only grocery store in town I can afford. Since then I barely shop for food. I just don't want to go back there.

    3. You poor dear! I can't imagine such a thing. You have to have food! ~hugs~ I wish you all the best.

  9. I'm one of those rare women who hates shopping - for anything! I tend to do it all online if I can. Living in the countryside, a shopping trip involves a long drive, finding somewhere to park (always a nightmare here in the UK) and battling through crowds. I'd be delighted if hubby did the shopping and I wouldn't care what he brought home (within reason!).

    1. I'm with you! I am lucky to live in a quiet suburb, though, where just about anything our hearts desire is within a twenty minute drive and easy parking. Be well!

  12. I am not one who likes to spend too much time shopping. But I do understand for a lot of people shopping is an invigorating past time.
What you have narrated in the post, happens in our house as well. I mostly check with my wife, if there is any doubt regarding the shopping list. But sometimes I have ended up getting something home that was not the one intended by my wife.
Surprise purchase does have its charm, but it all depends on what it is and when it is purchased!
