The Case of the Collapsing Cantaloupe

The other day my partner brought home the fruit I requested, a melon, and cottage cheese upon which to eat it. Yesterday afternoon I prepared to serve myself this yummy treat.

But the cantaloupe looked lumpy. Odd.

Preparing to cut into its rind and see what was what, I found a small swarm of gnats taking wing. Ugh. I picked up the fruit to find fuzzy mold all over the bottom, a shameful and disappointing waste.

What the heck?

A while later I solved the mystery. Also a little earlier in the week, my dear love pulled an ancient, near empty can of baked beans out of the refrigerator at my behest, only to leave it sitting on the counter. Last night I picked it up, dislodging the lid, and found the can was not rinsed clean for recycling as assumed.

It also had a fine coating of furry mildew. And there were more gnats. Those hungry little flyers must have transferred the mold from the beans to the fruit. No wonder almost every room of our home has been visited by those little pests. Maybe the next fruit we bring home should be from the freezer section.

What’s your favorite fruit?

  1. Pineapple is my favorite of all fruit. I love bananas and cantaloupe. Okay, strawberries are in there and blueberries. Okay, I admit that I love most fruit.

I hate those pesky gnats though. They work far too hard to annoy humans.

Have a fabulous day and weekend. Big hugs. ♥

  4. I don't think I can pick just one! Tree ripened peaches are pretty high on the list. But, so's a really good watermelon! The pluots from my tree (Flavor Supreme) are pretty much one of the most delicious things ever. Strawberries. Blood oranges. Grapes.
I guess it depends on what I'm in the mood for!

  6. I dislike those things...gnats are a pain in the rear. It seems like they just appear, hatch from NOTHING. WATERMELON...I love it. I can eat one big one all by myself...IN ONE DAY! HAHA...Bananas come next.

    2. I can! I love it so much but on the flip side, I have gotten some that I think would be yummy and had to toss most of it cause if it is not juicy and sweet, I want NO part of it.

  8. strawberries and bananas, along with blackberries are my favorites. But Mangos and Papayas too. Seems like every melon I get is bad, and then I feel like I wasted money. So now I don't buy them. Guess I need to grow some because I sure love them.

    1. Ooh, blackberries are a special treat. Too bad about your issues with melons. I have melon seeds from a friend to try growing them next year. I hope it works out. Best wishes!

  9. I hate those little fruit flies!!! But I do love certain fruits...blackberries and strawberries, pears, melons, a macintosh apple, and a good ripe peach, which I haven't had in forever.

  10. Oh dear! It's usually fruit flies in my house after I've let an apple go mouldy in the fruit bowl. I love fruit but I think my favourite is mango.

    1. Mango. Interesting. I find that a bit too sweet unless used in cooking. Then yum. Heh... Be well!
