One Great Find & Two Replies

Your replies are both correct, Liz A. and Andrew. Terra was high on catnip and there are a plethora of pet food related puzzles. I bought one years ago, in fact, hoping to slow down our dear departed kitty Tilly.

The Stimulo Feeder

My husband won’t use it. He fears the narrow food cups will cause whisker fatigue even though they’re supposed to dig food out with their paws. We also had a ball that dispensed treats when rolled. One half disappeared years ago. Current choices available are rather overwhelming. Terra and I both enjoy afternoon treat time. I’ll have to show video of her running.

Meanwhile, I went looking for garden center clearance items and scored a few perennials for 50% off (!) and a white mum for a mere five dollars (US). I added the bat and dried stems.

Sorry about my shadow...

Have you ever heard of whisker fatigue? Do you think garden centers no longer label mums as perennial but rather annual plants to sell more each autumn? Or am I just too cynical?

  1. Pretty flowers. Our planters are full of weeds. I'm sure our neighbors are most happy with us.

Have a fabulous day, Darla. Big hug. ♥

    1. You have plenty going on with all the home renovations! ~hugs~ And I'll bet you are a wonderful neighbor.

  2. I've never heard of whisker fatigue, but whiskers are sense organs, so it's better that cats eat from bowls that are wide enough to accomodate their whiskers at a distance from the side of the bowl.

  3. P.S. I have a few "bowls" similar to the one pictured. I use my with my cat, Ollie, who scarfs and barfs. Like you said, the openings are too small for cats to eat from, so they have to use their paw to drag the food out.

    2. The shelter named him Detroit Tony, and we knew that had to go.

  4. Maybe mums are one of those perennials that becomes unreliable in its second and subsequent years. Better that the customer does not have high expectations and feel cheated.

    1. That's a nice thought. Garden centers label other plants as perennial that don't do well here at all, however. I don't know how much money and effort I wasted on butterfly bushes and a former neighbor spent trying to grow azaleas. ~shakes head~ Ah well, live and learn.

  5. Yes, we know of whisker fatigue. We use low sided bowls for the cats to eat from, and very wide water bowls.

  6. Yes, you don't want whisker fatigue. Amazon has several slow feeder itmes that the kitties have to get the food out with their paws.

  7. I cringe when I see a cat where a child has cut its whiskers knowing how that is for a cat. I don't know if some garden center workers at big box stores would even know the difference in plants, but my cynical nature makes me think the same as you in deliberate mislabeling for sales purposes.

  8. The goal is making money, of course, but it's also true that whether a plant is an annual or perennial depends partly because where it's grown. Also, some perennials become "leggy" and bloom less after their first year.

I often see indoor plants labeled simply as "tropical plant," which tells one nothing about how much light and water they need. It's really inexcusable to place no value upon the welfare--and, I believe, the rights--of a living being, although that's what I do every time I pull a weed.

  9. HAHA...for me they are annuals cause I don't think I have ever had one come back the next yr. So there, they are doing that for me!! I have never gotten one or another type of feeder like that for my dog or cats. Neither eat fast. Misty would prob be my fast treat eater but I always give the treats to them laying them out and spreading them out with space between them. Dakota ate fast, really fast but I fixed him years ago with feeding him on a large plate with a short glass or cup in the center and putting his food around it. He had to work longer and harder to get around the plate! lol....I showed him. Miss him every day.

  10. That must have been a good bargain, for the flowers.

  11. Great deal on the mums. I thought they were an annual. :) I have heard of whisker fatigue. I did a review once for a special bowl that is shallow and wide to avoid whisker fatigue. To slow Joanie down, I put a golf ball in her bowl and it seems to help. :) XO
