Creature Feature

For the first time, I found monarch butterfly caterpillars on a milkweed plant. The tall perennial isn’t particularly attractive and that’s okay.
I collected some seeds and gave them to an interested neighbor passing by. Meanwhile, my husband found this informational article from the US Forest Service.

Did you know that releasing commercially grown butterflies can disrupt useful studies of the struggling natural population? Would you visit one of their famous overwintering sites?

  1. I won't raise butterflies, but I'll put in my gardens the plants that they need for successful lives.
And if not butterflies, then the bees can feast.

  2. We don't see butterflies much here which is weird cause we use to see them lots.

    1. What a shame, though interesting. I hope there aren't environmental issues.

  3. Butterflies are not something I see a lot of around here. Wished I did, they are beautiful. But with that said, I do have a butterfly/bee bath for them to drink from. I would love to be somewhere when a bunch of them butterflies were hatched out or released. I bet that we would be beautiful.

  4. I don't think I"ve ever seen a monarch caterpillar. This year, the butterfly bush, that usually is over run in birds, bees and butterflies, was mostly silent. The butterflies didn't come. Although bees did and a few birds.

    1. It's interesting how different species visit these various united states. I'm sorry you didn't get more critters.

  5. Do you follow Lisa's Garden Adventure? She just talked about milkweed, too. (https://lisasgardenadventureinoregon.blogspot.com/2022/08/narrow-leaf-milkweed.html)

    1. Thanks for this. Lisa is a talented gardener and generous person who once sent me seeds she couldn't use. :D

  6. Sorry I missed this. We have a lot of milkweed for the Monarchs. I think my hubby leaves too many of the ugly plants, but we do see them and one time we had a chrysalis by the door. XO

    1. By the door? That's awesome. I'm going to end up like your hubby if they spread. :D Hugs, my dear.
