He's Back!

Though eight years older than me, my husband shares a lot of my interests and experiences. A perfect example is the comedy of Gary Larson's 'Far Side'.

On his website Mr. Larson admits he dreaded the act of drawing (!), hence his 1995 retirement. Thank heaven making people gives him pleasure.

And hurray for digital drawing tools inspiring his comeback. Not all his jokes make sense to me. But sometimes I just burst out laughing.

Are you familiar with his work? Can you imagine returning to something after two-and-a-half decades on hiatus?

  1. Oh yeah, his humor is legendary! His comic of a kid pushing on a door of a school for gifted children still makes me chuckle.
I would think, as an artist, that your greatest works also become a millstone around their neck. Think of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who got so tired of Sherlock Holmes that he killed him off! The public outcry was so great, the man had to resurrect his sleuth. And Bill Watterson, of Calvin and Hobbes fame, simply STOPPED making those cartoons, feeling he'd done all that he could. But, with the advent of new technology, perhaps the creative juices flow again.

  4. My hubby and his friend used to get each other The Far Side page a day calendar every year and were so sad when it ended. This is great news. My favorite was The School for the Gifted with the kids pushing on a door marked pull. :)

  5. This is amazing, Darla!
Someone, as famous as Gary Larson, resurrecting his skills with the help of tech tools after 25 years!
Just shows the potential of these digital aids, and also how one should be open to the evolving world around us.
There is no end to possibilities, is it not?!
And by the way, though I haven't followed his works, I have seen his cartoons, and many of them are hilarious.

  7. My mom and dad are about 12 years apart, and they have some similar likes as well. Dad alway loved The Far Side. They remind him of B. Kliban. If you haven't seen any Kliban, check it out some day. They're alike in many ways.

  8. I am not sure that I could go back to doing something after that periof of time. My hubs was only a yr older then me but I dated a guy for four years that was 13 yrs older then me. It was surprising the things we had in common.
