Things Are Looking Up (?)

Well, our perfectly fine 2013 Chevy Volt has been totaled by the insurance company. Hidden damage to a very important battery skyrocketed the cost to more than the vehicle’s monetary value. While disheartened, I’ve been assured by my husband it would probably never have driven the same again, anyway.

That car fit our lifestyle so well, and Volts are no longer in production, but my husband is willing to go pre-owned. The charging station mounted in our garage cost over a thousand dollars, providing serious incentive. He hopes we can afford a 2017 model, which would be an upgrade over 2013 technology.

We have to wait on the insurance reimbursement check, of course.

In other news, tomorrow our area is supposed to see the coldest temperatures of the season. So of course our heat pump acted up. ~sigh~ I am happy to report the repairman made it out within hours. And the $3,000 (US) replacement part (!) for our high end unit is under warranty. We hope it will come in for replacement on Friday.

Thank heaven the heat pump has an electric back-up!

Is it too paranoid of me to think the warranty company will find a way to weasel out of paying and make us foot the bill?

  1. No, you'll be fine with the replacement part. You'll see.

I'm sorry about your car, but I'm betting hubby will find a newer one. Got my fingers crossed.

Have a fabulous day and stay warm. ♥

  2. I don't trust warranty companies, but fingers crossed that all goes well. Perhaps you need to look into a different brand of car. Because staying electric is definitely the way to go (especially since you already have the charging equipment).

    1. Thank you! We usually don't go for warranties, but this furnace was a huge expense and the service includes twice yearly checkups, a bonus. Be well!

  3. Sorry to hear your car was totaled. If your insurance company is anything like mine, your check will be ready within days!

I think it's better to have a car totaled than in bad shape and repaired, I wouldn't trust it, and I doubt anyone would want to buy it with a brand title (something I was unaware of until I was looking at replacement cars) if I ever wanted to. It is nice to have a newer car than what was lost! So, there is that at the end of all the frustration!

Hope the two of you aren't still feeling pains from the crash.

I think the warranty will hold. Oh... it must be nice to have a furnace. Of course, we aren't as cold, but my heater is electric, in the ceiling! Very inefficient. Unfortunately, they are forecasting snow here next week. I thought we'd get lucky and miss it this year.

    1. You have a point about repaired vehicles. I'd hoped it was just cosmetic. Oh, well. And we're fine. Thank you.

That's an interesting way to heat. I mean, hot air rises... Wild. Stay warm and safe!

  4. Of course your heat pump went south when freezing temps move in. Or below freezing. Or below zero even. I don't know, I live in fear of a tiny wreck and insurance totaling the car. I have only liability insurance. If someone hit me, and they happened to have insurance (rare around here), I'd get a check for the totaled car that would be worth pretty much zip. And all that money to insurance too. I can't think about it since it hasn't happened. Reading your post made think of that dire outcome. My insurance company sent me a survey to ask how they're doing. I said "Just fine, I'd guess. You take my money and I have taken nothing in return. I'd say that's a really good deal for you."

  6. CRAP....CRAP....CRAP....sounds like you are being a target lately for a lot of CRAP! Sorry, that is my word lately. So sorry about the car. The bad thing about that is that now you have to probably have a car note. Sucks when it is someone else's fault. I think about that all the time. I have no note and could not take one on so what would I do? SUCKS big CRAP....then the heat pump....OUCH, why does replacement parts have to cost so much. I had a new heat/air system put in early spring 2011 then a yr or two later a 700 buck part went out and it was under warranty, thank goodness. To have these energy efficient systems, stoves, units, fride's...etc we have to pay out the rear and then to replace a part it is crazy. Hang in there I am hoping that 2019 don't cont like that for you.
