Decked Out

We are blessed to live in a home without a mortgage, which we paid off some time ago. But as most adults know, the maintenance never ends. We have shelled out thousands and thousands of dollars over the summer months trying to get this brick house sealed against water damage in our often rain-soaked part of the Midwestern United States.

This week we are getting rid of an eyesore that we’ve lived with for twenty-five years, the original second story deck. I look forward to having a solid, safe, attractive structure that might actually inspire us to use it - rare (inviting) weather permitting.

The contractors are dedicated and trustworthy by everything I’ve seen. They show up when they say and work hard while here.

Day One!
I will be glad when they are done and gone.

So will Jezebel the cat. Like me, she prefers peace and solitude. There isn’t a quiet room in this house right now. I’m in the closest thing to that, where it only sounds instead of feels like the building is being ripped apart. The cellar isn’t even immune, as the support beams travel most of the way through the home, between the main and underground levels to conduct vibrations throughout.

Door to Our Kitchen - A Room With a View?

This morning in the kitchen the floor shuddered under my feet with the equipment being used on the other side of the wall. I kid you not.

Meanwhile, poor Jezebel chooses to hide under our bed all day, across the hall from where I’m sitting now. Not a good idea.

Unfortunately for her, there is an industrial sized generator rumbling between our house and the neighbor’s. That beast is what drove me out of bed this morning.

Do you have any major projects going on this month?

  1. It's such a nice position to be in with having your mortgage paid off, although, you're right, you still have to spend lots of money for upkeep and maintenance. Hope the noise is over with soon.

    1. Thank you. They're done! I'm so impressed that two guys completed this (to me) large job within four short days. What a joy.

  2. Yep, it's always something but we're on repair break since the clean up from the lightening strike on our house.

  3. It'll be great when it's done. Can you go out and work at a coffee shop or something? (By "work" I mean write.) It would probably be best to be out of the house until the noise is done.

    1. Thank you for the kind suggestion. I did okay today. And they're done! I couldn't believe how fast they worked. I'll have to share photos of the new deck.

  4. No major projects. I was living somewhere else when I bought my house, and had the big things done before I moved in. I did have it painted and new windows installed when I was here though. I'd love a new deck! Mine is ground level, just where I belong. I have a fear of heights, even a second floor deck! I suppose some day I'll need a new roof... sigh...

    1. Be sure to keep up maintenance, my dear! Every house has different requirements, I've learned.

  5. I think I need glasses, I thought you wrote you were in the closet- it said closest :) Home repairs are costly and nosiy, but the end result will make it worth it. We got our roof done 10 years ago and siding too. I actually missed the noise when they finally finished.

  7. Nothing major as of yet but I really need to get a couple more estimates and have some wood replaced on this place. Like you my house is free of payment but...on limited income or fixed as they call it things like repairs are money consuming. Thanks for the push, I need to get on the phone and make some calls for estimates.

    1. I'm also lucky that my partner handles lots of this stuff. I hate making phone calls like that. ~shakes head~ Best wishes, my dear!

  8. My husband "talks" a good project but rarely gets around to actually doing it! His latest is to turn our sitting-room and kitchen into one big kitchen and to build an extension as a new sitting-room. I just sit and nod and say, "Good idea," occasionally. It seems to keep him happy!

    1. I understand. ~grin~ I am thankful my husband hires things done when he doesn't know how to do the work. Be well, my dear!
