A Sweet Boy and a Tweet Reply

It turns out that a friend snuck me into an Awww... Mondays blog hop on behalf of the little fellow starring in this post. Thanks to the sweetheart at Comedy Plus! You can find other participants at the bottom of this post.

I believe our little household has an official new member, a young orange tabby male who showed up meowing in the next door neighbor’s yard Friday morning. His wellness veterinary visit is scheduled for Tuesday, so for now he is segregated from our two old female cats until after that to avoid possible disease transmission. We will also have the vet tech scan for an identification chip.

Very Skinny Boy on Our Driveway, More Hungry Than Skittish
My SO, in particular, cannot believe a feral cat could be so friendly, which is probably true. I hope nobody claimed him prior for he is super sweet, very gentle with me, happy to lounge about, seeming grateful for his windfall.

He got his (we presume) first taste of catnip a few minutes ago. The reaction immediate, we had some fun before he wound down. Now he is on a foldable patio recliner next to my chair here in our carpeted cellar.
Styx Claiming the Cushion Used to Support My Laptop
We decided to name him after a favorite socio/political Youtube content creator, Styxhexenhammer666, known as ‘Styx’ for short. It seemed fitting, as both have a very thin build and are talented orators. Our little Styx made very clear he wanted our help. And Styx the man (real name Tarl Warwick) is also an accomplished gardener, so our four footed boy finding us working in ours sort of sealed the deal.

I also believe our kitty here crossed a river of adversity to find us. He didn’t have the benefit of Charon (another name I considered) ferrying him across the River Styx.

Yesterday afternoon I signed onto Twitter and mentioned my consideration, addressing Mr. Warwick by his handle. To my delight, the busy man responded.

Are you jealous like we are that felines can get high off a safe, legal herb?

  1. No need to be jealous here in Oregon! It's legal! I don't call it "safe," though, only because it is a medicinal herb, and many people do have adverse reactions to it.

I don't want to get "high!" Never used it, even in the 70s in high school, and I certainly knew where to find it, and was offered it! The problem now is too many dispensaries. My city believes they will self-limit in time, so okay ALL the permits, so it was embarrassing when my son visited to see a shop literally next to another, all through town. It has valuable medical uses of course.

My cats love the catnip spray, I use it too discourage them from clawing the sofa. They also like a sprig of fresh catnip from the garden. Benny eats it! I brought in quite a big stem the other day, and before his sister, Velvet, could get up he'd eaten it, stem and all! Fresh is supposed to make them sleepy. Nah... but, it doesn't turn them nutty.

  4. Styx is a cutie. He is most likely a stray and not a true feral. I don't mind that cats can get high legally because I have never been tempted myself by any drugs.

  5. Bless you for your kindness. Many would just take him straight to a shelter like the one where i volunteer, and we have so many.

    1. Thank *you* for your good works! My heart couldn't handle volunteering at our local PAWS for more than a year.

  6. Darla,

I was thinking of the mewsic group when I spied his name. :) We used to give our kitty catnip when we had her and she loved it. In retrospect, I'm thinking why did I do this? I mean, I've never been high and yet I allowed my kitty to get bonkers. How shameful of me! :)

    1. He seems to understand and appreciate that fact, too. Styx only makes little meows if he hears me through the door, no wailing or scratching, just happy to see me when I come down. Jezebel, on the other hand, attacks the door because she wants access to me (though mostly to ignore me across the room LOL). Thanks for the kind word.

  8. He might not be per say a feral as much as a kitty that has been dropped off. I know the one, Shadow that showed up at the barn was a drop off, not feral at all. Too friendly from the beginning and I am sure totally confused as to why it was dropped off esp since she is an older cat too. Well, I think little one has found a good home....I mean lap to veg in! haha...and he is such a bright pretty orange color.

    1. oh yeah...meant to add not really jealous of the legal stuff as much as I wondering if it would be good for pain. Might need to study up on it, if so might be making me a tea! haha

    2. I wish I could know the origin stories of all our adoptees. People can be so awful. I wish you weren't in pain/fatigued/itchy... Gah... Fibro is awful! ~hugs~ Be well, my dear.

  12. I'm pretty sure your Styx had a home before. While I hope you get to keep him, I'd rather hear a story about how he was lost rather than abandoned. The second story is crueler.

Nah, I'm not jealous over anyone getting high. Wouldn't want to. Never been tempted.

  13. He is so beautiful and so very lucky. I love his name and his bright happy color! We use a lot of catnip around here but lately my patches where I grow outside, my crop in other words, has been plundered by neighbor cats frequently. Argh!
