Hot and Bothered

Today I harvested the first of our ‘hot burrito’ peppers. We also picked a few eggplants, several treasured Roma tomatoes, and still more cucumbers. But these new-to-us chilies have been long awaited.

Since we sampled a fresh gong bao pepper with all its tag’s heat warnings and didn’t suffer overmuch, I thought nothing of slicing up one of these chubby orange beauties. Wow, what a shock! Over an hour after digesting half in a few bites, my lungs are still a bit congested and my throat irritated. At least my nose quit running (see * in notes below). And that’s after removing the seeds, which brings me to some things we need to remember.

Notes:
1. Wear plastic gloves to handle ‘hot burrito’ fruits in future.
2. Do not confuse them for sweet snacking peppers of similar size.
3. * Flimsy facial tissues do not protect nasal cavities from capsaicin. Heh... Another lesson learned.

Sweet ones (right) have a lobed end.

On another note, thank you to all my silly blog’s faithful followers. Your kind words and clever tips are much appreciated. I adore you all and plan to look up an eggplant lasagna recipe as well as freezing unused fresh onion in future. ~grin~ Stay safe and sane, my friends.

Did you know the Scoville scale estimates the heat level of hot peppers? Would you guess a United States pharmacist formulated the test in 1912?

  1. Got to be careful with peppers. These sound way to hot for me, but I would try them anyway. Yes the seeds need to be removed first. That makes them even hotter.

Have fabulous day and week, Darla. ♥

  2. I've heard that high Scoville numbers actually kill one's taste buds! Oh sure, they grow back quickly, but yikes!
I once rubbed my eyes with some sort of hot pepper juice, and I almost had The Hubby rush me to ER! After less than 30 minutes, the burn subsided, and I won't touch those bad boys again, with or without gloves!

  3. I am aware of the Scoville scale. I don't know it, though, as anything more spicy than table pepper is too much for me. In fact, table pepper is too much for me most of the time. So, I would go nowhere near your peppers.

  4. Our HuMom uses paper towels because with the local sinus weather, tissues will NEVER stand up.

  5. I can't even handle a jalapeno so I would not be able to deal with these.

  6. Eggplant is more popular as brinjal here. Not so much my favourite. But I like it when fried or a dish is made with small pieces of it.

    1. Ooh, I looked up a recipe and might try it. We adore curry. I'll let you know our opinion if we try it. Thanks!

  7. I had no idea there was a "hot" scale. I know they are good for clearing my sinuses when I am congested. Just a whiff will get me to sneezing and clear my sinuses completely. Yes, I use hot dried peppers that way.

  8. I enjoy a mild to medium pepper heat but these sound like a heat that is beyond my ability to endure. Glad to hear your garden is thriving. All the best!

  9. I am not a fan of really hot peppers. I do love cooking with them from time to time. Talking about wearing gloves to cut them, I have two funny stories I could tall about that but I am not doing it on your blog...haha....

  11. and for all the guys out there- dad says to make sure to wash your hands after handling these things before you pee! Not sure how he'd know that since he can't stand anything hot or spicy.

  12. Well okay, not sure what the heck is going on but this is several times I go back to see your comment to my comment and my comment is not there...I wonder if its me not doing something right (huh when all I have to do it publish my comment) or if blogger is screwing with me. But here I am again thinking that my last comment was funny (I am sure of that) but now I can't remember just how I replied!! Trying again...HOT PEPPERS....I like peppers with heat, just not ones that will burn my mouth off. But I do have a couple of funny stories about others and their peppers but they are rather questionable stories as to tell on social media or not!! haha...but I do have one I can mention...several years ago my family (the boys) decided that it would be cool to do a pepper tasting contest at Thanksgiving when all was around. The silly nephews and my oldest grand found out that biting into a GHOST pepper was not wise!!! Brought some laughs but not from them! Okay....hoping you get this comment....here I go, hitting publish....wishing myself luck.

    1. Oh, I'm sorry to have dropped the ball. The delay is on my end. I'm glad your boys didn't hurt themselves! That can actually be dangerous.
