Why I Have Been Absent from Blogging

On Saturday, April 12th my husband asked me to call for an ambulance. He felt weak, dizzy, and overall just terrible. Almost a week and a half later he’s doing much better. In fact, he should be home now. Yesterday I spent the entire day with him hoping to bring him back.

This morning he told me not to make the hour long round trip unless he gets cleared. So far, we’re still on hold. I’ll explain why later.

Like last year, a prescription medication caused an acute kidney injury. This time an extreme potassium buildup caused even more damage. He spent two days in intensive care. That was scary, especially due to his negative mindset.

Thank heaven, improved organ function has cleared his mind. He no longer talks like he’s about to die. ~shudder~ Meanwhile, until his kidneys fully heal he needs thrice weekly dialysis and can not take his oral diabetic medicine.

Thus I’ve been shown how to administer insulin using an injector pen, as well as install/replace the subcutaneous blood sugar monitor. Neither procedure is overcomplicated and we are grateful for these scientific advances. But please wish me luck.

The reason he’s still stuck in hospital is because there is a scheduling issue with our local DaVita Comprehensive Kidney Care center. My guy’s medical team won’t let him out in case the next round of dialysis due tomorrow must be done on an inpatient basis again.

Update! The typical Monday, Wednesday, Friday outpatient schedule can be altered to Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Maybe some locations aren’t open on weekends. ~shrugs~ He’s staying overnight but I will bring him home in the morning. ~fingers crossed~ His spirits are high and he’s in good hands; I couldn’t ask for more.

Are you or a loved one prescribed numerous pharmaceutical drugs? Do you question some as necessary, perhaps even detrimental?

  1. Prayers that your husband comes home and he returns to normal. Scary indeed. Medication sometimes is worse than the disease. I only take two pills and I'm happy about that.

Hang in there, my friend. I know you're going to take good care of your precious husband. More healing hugs and prayers. ♥

  3. OMG. How scary. I'm so sorry your husband and you had to go through all this. I'm glad he's on the mend. Take care. Of both of you. (Blogging will be here when you have the mental energy for it.)

  4. I am so sorry that happened. I can't even imagine how scary that was/is. I hope he won't need the dialysis for long, but thank God it is available. We have to be so careful, it is sad we can't trust doctors and pharmacists to be sure meds are safe. He will be in my prayers and you will be too. XO

  5. Oh boy, my first neighbor now deceased, ended up with potassium issues, too high or too low, that made him go blind. It was finally resolved with a medication change. The barn cat man, in his 80's, out on Seven Mile, does dialysis 3x a week. I have a friend whose brother did the same for years, but finally got a kidney transplant and he's ok now. I'm so sorry you will have to give him the injections. Is there a reason he cannot? Too weak still? I wish you luck and so much more.

    1. He is doing the injections himself (!) and it might be a short term thing.

  7. love one on scripts? I know I am. Yesterday I often wonder what all that crap does to your body. I am so sorry for your husband and you having to deal with all that, the fear is horrible. Do you have close friends or family close to talk to, be with, help you with things when you need to lean? I hope hubs continues to improve. Back to wondering what all they do to your body, I felt years ago when I had my gastric bypass that maybe not only was the extra weight causing the liver to not work great, could it also be clogged up with all those meds that it has to filter out? With that said, I have to take gabapentin for my fibro. It causes memory loss, OH YAY! Plus, the meds I take from meds for the Fibro to BP, cause weakness, being tired all the time, no energy, I barely have any ump, but I have to push and push to get things done. So, meds might help with one issue, but what other type of issue does it cause that might require another med?

  8. Darla, sorry to know about your dear husband's medical issues. The level of sodium and potassium are tricky. Yes, sometimes medicines might create unexpected complications. The only way is to trust the doctors and hope for the best. I am very glad that things are looking up and more importantly your husband is cheerful. Hope by now he is back home. Wishing him a speedy recovery.
