Mirror, Mirror

My husband and I often joke that I live the life of a housecat. The fact Jezebel has become almost a Voodoo doll for my existence takes this to the next level.

Case in point, she developed that aforementioned limp in her right front leg about the same time my right shoulder became painful. Fortunately, we both recovered. She must have landed wrong following a jump. While my injury is a mystery, a doctor’s recommended painkiller and exercise regimens healed me.

Meanwhile, I also related a false cancer scare caused by the well meaning vet technician who left a message regarding her blood test results. Guess what happened last week following my latest mammogram?

Yup. I got a surprise, dreaded call to come back for further examination.

No worries, though.

A complicated cyst was diagnosed during my follow-up ultrasound. Unsurprised, the doctor advised more scans in six months just to make certain the abnormality is stable.

That last bit of news left me much calmer. Things are looking up! Heck, last week we got our initial shingles vaccinations after being on the waiting list for almost a year. We’ll get the secondary booster sometime within the next six months.

My arm still hurts and itches a bit around the injection sight, but that’s preferable to the agonizing condition it’s meant to prevent. The Christian reverend I engaged to perform our 1997 wedding suffered a shingles outbreak before our big day. Fortunately, that considerate man got us into contact with a surrogate.

That fellow showed up late to the B&B I booked, late enough to make some folks nervous, but did a fine job. For me, it just meant we’d enjoy yet another engagement party before eloping.  To my groom’s chagrin, my promise of an intimate service didn’t pan out like he expected. Both our mother’s hosted large pre-parties in Northeast Ohio and the wedding guest list doubled over what he expected. How could I have turned away friends’ and coworkers’ spouses?

As for the big day, those memories remain the favorite out of all my five decades. Nothing upset me, not even when my father smashed my three tiered cake against the wall. I’ll save that story for another post. The tell fits nicely with a strange bit of recent news.

Do you know the tradition of freezing a portion of wedding cake for the couple to share on their first anniversary? How about washing it down with sparkling wine for breakfast?

We did. Heh… What yummy decadence.

  1. I'm due for my mammogram and bone density test next month. I've already had a biopsy and it scared me to pieces. It turned out well though.

Yes I knew about the wedding cake. I like how you did your cake a year later.

Have a fabulous day and week, Darla. ♥

  3. Glad it was benign. It wouldn't be the first time pet and human shared ailments. Maybe Jezebel was trying to help you heal.

No, I know nothing about weddings. Seriously. I've never even attended one. (Well, one, but I was dragged to it, and I missed the reception.)

    1. I like that thought. Our pets have been a real boon to our lives. How interesting you only attended one wedding. I could count all those I've attended, starting as a junior high school student, but it would take a while. Thanks for the visit!

  4. I am glad it was just a scare and nothing more. We froze the top of our wedding cake, well, my mom did as we had left for the honeymoon. And we did eat it on our first anniversary. It was as good as fresh because she wrapped it in plastic wrap about 50 times :)

  7. Oh, no! Such a scary call to get. I glad the doctor was reassuring and I hope all goes well with the follow-up. The shingles sounds just awful. I know people who have had it and wouldn't wish it on their worst enemies.

  8. That is so scary when you get a call back. Hopefully all is good. I've had a few of those, but they never amounted to anything after a watch and wait period.

  9. BREAKFAST CAKE....well I love sweets so I am sure I could do that also, not so much the wine! So glad that you and kitty are doing better. Shoulder pain as well as front leg issues (I am sure) can be a PAIN. No pun, oh hell yeah, you know I meant it. Anyway, the boob scare is not fun. I went through a phrase in my 30's that it became a normal for me. I had several surgeries to have lumps removed, all cyst. But the issue was they were showing up when I checked, they showed up for the doc however, no form of scanning would show it up. I had suffered in my 20's of a hormone issue that just decided to come out as lumps in my 30s. SUCKS...but I finally just started, against doc wishes, of watching them until they went away. Once I had an ablation and thrown into menopause I stopped having them. I was 46 at the time....and it was great in several ways! There again it was not my first cancer scare either. First...I was 18! And i am still here! haha

  11. Glad your health scares came to nothing! I've had shingles and it was AWFUL. I'm usually pretty fit - only had a week off in total during 40+ years of full-time work, apart from four weeks off with shingles. So you're very wise to be inoculated! As for wedding cake, here in the UK we post wedding cake in little boxes to people who couldn't attend the wedding. Do they do that elsewhere in the world, I wonder?
